We think that the diseases like tuberculosis, malaria and HIV are the most dangerous for the human beings, but there is another health attack which we would discuss.
We all light fire for different reasons- for cooking, lighting cigarettes etc.
When we go for cooking, we typically use wood, charcoal, animal dung which produces carbon monoxide gas. This gas typically affects more than 2 billion people of the globe and mostly affects women health. We never focus on it, but it is one of the most dangerous household health hazards. It pollutes the in-house air resulting more than 4.3 million deaths in a year.
Do you know this number is bigger than that of the deaths causing from tuberculosis, malaria and HIV infections?
How is the CO Dangerous for Health?
Although I am not a doctor, I want to make a short note on the health attack made by carbon monoxide or CO. it is originated from the impolite combustion of fuels.
Incomplete combustion occurs when there is insufficient oxygen to burn the hydrocarbon present in the fuels.
Exposure to CO inhibits the blood to combine with the oxygen by breaking the chain of haemoglobin. CO combines to the haemoglobin producing carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) which greatly diminishes the ability of blood to combine with oxygen.
Moreover, the binding affinity of haemoglobin to CO is greater than that with oxygen. According to the scientists, the affinity is 300 times greater in the case of carbon monoxide.
Therefore a small portion of Co can make the blood deficient of oxygen largely resulting in a reduction of oxygen transport to the tissues.
It causes rapid breathing, respiratory problem, headache, and so on. Finally, the heart gets chocked due to deficiency of oxygen.
The Health Wearable to Support Women Health:
The Grameen Intel Social Business (GISB) has taken an initiative to run a pilot project of health wearable for the small villages of India and Bangladesh where the exposure of CO is high due to excessive use of woods, animal dung for cooking.
It is a small colored bangle which would have a sensor to sense the dangerous level of CO.
When the level of CO would exceed danger level, a red light would blink and inform the owner.
According to the company, women are in the high risk of exposure to the harmful gas during making foods at home.
They have made women health the prime focus of the project. If the project becomes successful, a huge number of expecting mothers will have healthy childbirth.
The name of the wearable is COEL or Carbon Monoxide Exposure Limiter. It is water resistant and made of molded gold.
The device would run on the battery which would last for 10 months. Moreover, the wearable would make the women informed on 80 different pregnancy wellness messages along with CO alert in local languages.
