Urban Maharashtra Declared Open Defecation Free

President Ram Nath Kovind hails Maharashtra government for exemplary work towards cleanliness, says efforts towards cleanliness is true service to humanity.President Ram Nath Kovind addressed a function held to declare urban Maharashtra open defecation free.

Hailing Maharashtra govt for their exemplary work towards cleanliness, President said that, with the declaration of urban Maharashtra open defecation free, almost half of Maharashtra has become open defecation free, since 49 percent population in Maharashtra lives in urban areas.

President also said that as a responsible citizen, we all should make an efforts to keep our surroundings neat and clean.
Commending actor Amitabh Bachchan for promoting toilets, he said the veteran Bollywood superstar is inspiring people across the country with his “Darwaza Bandh, Bimari Bandh” promo. Women are taking the lead in demanding toilets. “Our daughters are now asking if the household that she will be wed into has a toilet,” he said.

One of the key elements that would ensure that people use a public toilet is that the user cleans it after use. “People shun public toilets because they are in a terrible state. Those using it must ensure that it is clean after use,” he said.

Pankaja Munde, minister for rural development said the percentage of toilets in rural areas had gone up from 44% to 88%. By October next year all of rural Maharashtra will be ODF, she said. Declaring urban Maharashtra as ODF, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that there is a need to change mind-set towards open defecation. To achieve that goal, the state government has launched ODF Watch, asking people to use toilets and avoid open defecation. Fadanvis said the entire state will be ODF by 2019.
