The ruling BJP has picked incumbent Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind as its choice for President of India, party president Amit Shah announced today.
The announcement came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with top leaders of the BJP.
A look at the Journey of Ram Nath Kovind:
Born on October 1, 1945 at Kanpur Dehat (UP) into a Dalit family, Shri Ram Nath Kovind is a BCom and LLB graduate from Kanpur University.
After graduation, Kovind went to Delhi to prepare for the Indian Administrative Services (IAS) entrance test. He failed to pass it twice but made it in his third attempt.
He, however, did not join as he was selected for the allied services and started practicing the law.
He went on to serve as PS to Morarji Desai in the Janata Party government in 1977.
Kovind was elected to Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh during the two terms of 1994-2000 and 2000-2006.
He represented India in the United Nations in New York and addressed United Nations General Assembly in October 2002.
He was president of the BJP Dalit Morcha from 1998 to 2002.
He is currently holding the position of Bihar Governor since 2015.
