Sepsis diagnosis: IIT Delhi invented device

Sepsis or Septicemia is one of the most leading causes of human death in the hospitals. It is a disease cause by immune response. In this disease the patient dies from the immune response of his or her own body against the infections caused inside the body. We all know that we become diseased by the infection caused by the parasites from the outer environment. They either enter the body fluids or infect the upper layer of the body. On the other hand in this case of sepsis, the body starts showing immune response against any infection of its own tissue which causes the death of the patient. In this case, the heart rate, breathing rate increases, fever occurs. In most of the cases the infection occurs in the brain tissue, urinary system, heart, and so on.

It seems we know everything about the health problem. On the other hand, actually we cannot diagnose the critical points regarding sepsis at the right time, and the patient dies. There is a new solution that has come from the IIT Delhi. The researchers of IIT Delhi has invented a low cost device which would be able to diagnose the sepsis so that we would be able to make some necessary arrangements for the patients.

It has brought a hope for the sepsis patients

Sepsis is the leading cause of death in the hospitals of everywhere. It is caused by the Gram-negative bacteria. Due to the fact that the Gram-negative bacteria are predominant in the intestinal flora, Sepsis has become also common. There is an endotoxin present in the wall f the bacteria, which causes the sepsis.

Till date the diagnosis of this disease was very troublesome and expensive. The new device would make the doctors able to diagnose it very efficiently and easily at a very low cost. The device works on the principle of colorimetric. The colorimetric process would detect the level of endotoxins in the blood and tell the degree of infection. In the detecting probe a common antibiotic named colistin is conjugated with the gold nanoparticles to detect the level of infection.

The principle behind the mechanism

Let’s take a look on the main working principle behind the detection. The detecting probe having antibiotic and gold nanoparticles bind to the endotoxin present in the blood serum. It is to be noted in this respect that the antibiotic has specific affinity toward the endotoxin. The gold nanoparticles are red in  colour and therefore the endotoxin bound to the detecting probe also get red in colour. The degree of the redness depends on the amount of endotoxin present in the serum and thus on the degree of the infection. More is the amount of endotoxin; more would be the degree of redness. And that is how the sepsis can be diagnosed easily.
