Irom Sharmila was then 27 when she started her fasting in the year of 2000. The AFSPA or the Armed Forces Special Powers Act gave the army emergency rule in the northeastern state. Just before starting her protest 10 people including two children were killed by the personnel of the Assam Rifles and that is why she started her protest to repeal the act.
